Easy Guide to Store your Grain, Malt Extracts and Yeast

Homebrewlovers buy the bulk while making a purchase of brew. There can be mainly two reasons either you find a great deal or you are a little more ambitious. In fact, we also recommend you to bulk buy. It is the excellent way to save the money in the long run. Bulk buying grains or re-harvesting yeast is the amazing way to cut the cost while brewing top-notch beers.

Have you ever given thought that what will you do when you have all ingredients with you? Will they stay fresh or how do you store for maximum time? How long do the ingredients stay if store appropriately? Let’s take a look at each ingredient to know the exact way of storing them and expected time to store them as well.

Grain

Grains are very easy to store. All you need is a container and cool/dry place to store it. An air-tight and light container that keeps the bugs away is recommended, rest everything depends upon you. In fact, expensive dog food container will work best to store grains. We have found two best containers that serve the purpose of storing grains i.e. Rubbermaid style bins or 5-gallon buckets. We have found that lots of places use various kind of icing like donut shops, bakeries and they have lots of these so can give you if you ask. You can also purchase Gamma lid for lower prices. These lids will make 5-gallon buckets airtight. They are simple and best to make a 5-gallon bucket lid with a rubber seal. We prefer 1 or 2-grade plastic buckets. That means it is either grade 1–PET plastic or Grade 2 – HDPE, both are airtight container. Any other plastic more than grade 3 can leak air into the bucket. You can see the grade by looking the symbol stamped into the bucket. The ideal temperatures for grain storage are between 50–70 degrees Fahrenheit, and un-milled grain stored under these conditions is generally good for a year.

Malt Extract (Dry and Liquid Syrup)

Malt Extracts can be easily stored in the home. Keep the liquid malt extract in the container where it comes in and needs to be stored in a cool dry place between 50-70 degrees. It is similar to bulk grain. Liquid malt extract will last up to 2 years in the unopened jar. In case, you did a bulk buy and have cracked the seal, then you can store up to 3 months. It can start growing mold and get funky during the time. On the other hand, Dry Malt Extract can last around a year in the original container. The container should be air-tight sealed and away from light sources. Range should be 50 – 70 degree temperature ranges.

Yeast

The storage of yeast is quite simple. Leave it in the fridge and it’s done. In case, you want to re-harvest your own yeast then you have to make sure that it should be in a sanitary container and kept cold till it is ready to put into a starter. Yeast loses viability over time so ensure to use a yeast calculator to find how many viable cells have left before you pitch.
